Spring Life 2022 – Honoring Rachel Carson

There is a good amount of wildlife activity around the lake in Spring and this video captures some of the residents and visitors.
The video also honors Rachel Louise Carson who was born on 27 May 1907 in Springdale, a small village close to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.   Rachel was a marine biology scientist who wrote a number of books including ” Silent Spring” in 1962 which heralded a new environmental movement.
Her scientific observations identified the threat from chemical pesticides, such as DDT, which were negatively affecting many living things.   Rachel’s voice likely saved the American Bald Eagle from extinction.  DDT was banned in 1972.
This video includes many local creatures, large and small, and some quotes from Rachel Carson.
The American Bald Eagle is also featured as we had a pair of eagles visit our raptor platform this Spring.
The eagles did a lot of Spring nest-tending, bringing sticks and grass.  Their visit was late in the nesting season and hopefully next season they will get an earlier start and take up residence locally.
Hope you enjoy the video.  Share it with your friends and family.
