First Ice

A video “First Ice” featuring patterns, dynamics and reflections of ice forming on Silver Lake.  The ice formation was protracted this winter with a warm December and strong winter winds.
The video gives perspectives on the ice patterns as crystals grow over a period of several weeks.
Migrating birds find momentary rest in the islands of open water not yet covered by the blanket of ice.
The ice grows crystal fingers out into the open water that are bent by the force of the north wind.
The early ice is streaked with cracks cleaned by water seeping from below.
Adjacent to Silver Lake in NE Pennsylvania is the High Point Preserve that is under the Stewardship of the Edward L Rose Conservancy.
