Sandhill Cranes in Susquehanna County

How many of you have seen this beautiful newcomer to Susquehanna County, with its long neck and legs, bald red crown and elongated wing feathers that look like a fluffy bustle? Or perhaps you have been fortunate enough to hear its bugle call, which can be heard some 2 1/2 miles away.  Sandhill Crane numbers have been increasing slowly in the County since the first ones were seen and heard on a Bird Walk at the Woodbourne Forest Preserve on May 6, 2016.  We know Sandhill Cranes mate for life, choosing their partners based on dancing displays, but to date no one has reported a juvenile bird in our County.

You will learn so much more about this fascinating species from Molly Giles, a wildlife biologist who has worked for the PGC Northeast Region for the past 14 years. Her background is largely based in waterfowl ecology and management. She also performs research and monitors wildlife populations ranging from game species like bear and turkey to threatened and endangered species, and species of greatest conservation like hare and woodrats.

The E.L. Rose Conservancy will be offering this program on the Sandhill Crane on Saturday, June 6th, at 1 PM, to be held in the Susquehanna County Conservation District’s Board Room, where the walls have been painted by our local artists displaying our wildlife.  The Board Room can only accommodate 35 people, so if you are interested in attending this program, we would appreciate your letting us know, but it is not necessary.  joycestoneuke25@gmail.com.
